January 2004 Archives

January 1, 2004

Happy New Year! Justin and my father-in-law were the first on our 2004 crew, helping to put up the beginnings of our siding on the dome.

We used the good weather to our advantage, as we can use less than pleasant days to do inside work on joists, the subfloor and other things.

Subfloor Nearly Complete!

On Friday, Justin and Shane (yes, the famous Intihar!) came out on our oh-so-muddy Hearthwood to help put up the last of the joists and subfloor.

I got up early and went to Bull Run, picking up 10 sheets of Tongue & Groove ("T&G") 3/4" plywood, some rim board for our rear deck, bolts and nuts, joist hangers and stair support hangers. Then I went to home depot to get subfloor glue.

On site, Justin, Shane and myself slipped around in the mud and moved our materials up into the house.

More Siding!

This past Sunday we worked on even more siding on the back of the house.

As we were about to head out, Josh called up to say he would be there, which allowed Jean to stay home with Lucas most of the day.

She related Saturday's installation modifications to me: blind nailing on the top of the siding planks, double-checking the1 1/4" overlap that Bob drew while cutting, etc.

Third Floor Framing!

This weekend was the coldest yet! Saturday we didn't get anything done on site, but did have a wonderful lunch at Old Dominion Brew Pub with Kim & Paul and Justin & Holly (not forgetting Emmy!).

Sunday was a bit warmer at 14 degrees, and I got out to the site around 9 with my Mom. Just as we were starting work on framing the third floor, Noah showed up! Perfect!

During the morning, we put up one rectangular wall, facing the living room. I even framed out a window! That wall didn't go entirely without mishap though. First off, I managed to nail our wall to the floor while constructing it. We had to pry up the thing with the crow bar. Then, as we were raising the wall, Noah said, "Isn't there supposed to be a door here?" Hmm.

More Stairs and Other Stuff

This past weekend was another brilliant example of the mid-atlantic winter weather pattern that makes it difficult to forcast here. Saturday we had some decent sub-zero weather, making it easy to park on-site, but quite frigid to work. Late Saturday it began to warm to just above freezing and then began to sleet. Yummy. By Sunday the site was a mish-mash of freezing rain and mud and puddles:) That didn't deter us, however, from accomplishing a few things at Hearthwood...

HVAC and Electric

My office gave me the morning off to help Jean with laying rock dust in the electrical trench this morning. Let me tell you that when one says "dust", sweeping light dust comes to mind. This is nothing of the sort. Remember the gravel on the playground when you were in elementary school? That funny smell it gave your hands after pushing your toy truck through it during recess? That's what we're working with. Kind of like flour-in small quantities, not a problem, but in wheel-barrow loads, quite heavy...

More Snow!

We got a fair bit of snow (and are expecting more), snow I went out to Hearthwood to plow the drive with my parents' Kubota tractor.

It took me just over an hour, but I was able to clear most of it off, for a gravel driveway, anyway.
