Into the Fray!

Over the weekend we began immersing ourselves into the details of our dreamhome construction. Much like a hot-tub, at first it was hot and confusing, but now I feel like we're in the groove.

Jean and I can rattle off details and constructo-buzzwords like how many cubic yards of concrete we need, "monolithic slab", "step-flashing", and "plumber's crack".

Jean is out picking up the plat from our Civil Engineering firm (second part, really), and getting ideas of how much and when (if at all) our sub-contractor jobs will cost.

We're sending out schedule-oriented details through the hearthwood herald, so if you're wanting for that sort of thing in your inbox, and you feel a profound need to work up some karmic credit through samaritan deeds, drop us a line!

Permits, Electric and Appliances, Oh My!

Ok, so I'm not too original here, quoting mostly from our Hearthwood Herald, but here's the gist:

"...apparently VDOT says it's 3 weeks now. We'll see. I called today and we have still not been issued a permit number. (apparently sitting on someone's desk for a week is SOP) So there's not too much to report. I meet with a guy from Novec on Thursday to see about getting electricity - but of course they won't be able to actually do anything about it until the permits are all through..."

So we actually have an approved grading plan and building plan and our building permit is just waiting on our VDOT permit - much like a great Tetris score cascades into being when you slide that one final long block into the proper hole.

Jeano is meeting Mr. NOVEC tomorrow to have him spec out where the electric line will go, how many hapless trees will die for the sake of our being on the grid, and how many hours we'll spend clearing for the line (15 foot swath if below ground line and 30 foot if above ground, the latter in which they would do the clearing themselves).

Jeano has been a consumer trooper! We've priced out appliances at Sears & Roebuck, and Jean has priced out comparison pricing at our consumer club, through which we get a decent discount. We've got dishwashers, clothes washers, dryers, cook tops, ovens, trash compactors, and wall-to-wall carpeting all priced out and ready to go. Geez. Nothing seems too expensive when you begin dishing out $1000 checks for one appliance or another.

If you haven't already received the Hearthwood Herald about needing folks to help transport the pieces of our future home from its shipping truck to our flatbed trailers, so we can get it to our house site. If you have ANY interest in helping us out and getting some Karmic Credit (or redeeming some:) ) , now is the time!!!
When? Sunday 2-6pm
Where? Starting at Hearthwood, traveling in between the intersection of Colchester and Pope's Head Road
What? Semi-heavy lifting of plywood and 2x4 triangles and wall sections from truck to trailer.
Who? ANYONE who feels they are up to it. And some who don't as well. Even an hour of help will be just fine. CONTACT US PLEASE!!!

House Corners

A short one here. The house site has rough corners now. You can see Jeano standing in the center of our 39' dome plan. You can kind of make out the perimeter of wooden stakes with orange tape.

A mess o' home goods

Saturday, we went to the mini auction in Jessup, MD. And came back with a bunch of great stuff.
Marsha and Bill, hoping to find some hardwood flooring, were gracious enough to come and help out. Not only did they find their flooring, but the two helped us wrestle our winnings onto the trailer and truck, along with the help of other good samaritans.

The Dome Has Landed-repeat-The Dome Has...

There's no telling what you can do with a dozen loving friends and family members. We didn't have our camera out that day, but here are some photos of the tarped pieces...

Jean has left the building!

Holy Carp. We have our building permit. And Electrical Permit. And now we can actually go out to Hearthwood and begin clearing. And no police sirens are going to sound, no klaxons blaring, no stodgy person behind a desk can say "you'll never build there."

Site Clearing

We were lucky with hurricane Isabel - we only lost power for a day or so, and it afforded me a day off work to help Jean clear the site!

Electric line, permits and errata

Jeano heard from NOVEC recently and the only option they are willing to do is clear a 30 foot swath and run at least some of our electric line above ground. Groan. We had really not wanted to clear so much of the forest. The only good part is that they are responsible for it, not us.

Jeano also met with the county official responsible for granting us our well and septic permits. He didn't see any issues and we should have those within two weeks!

The TJI folks haven't gotten back to us just yet.

We're digging our footers tomorrow! Jean, my mom and Kathy have been on site ALL WEEK putting in long hours getting the measurements right. I wish I could be out there with them:)

Digging Footers

This weekend was incredible. Incredibly cathartic, incredibly productive and incredibly exhausting.

On Saturday my parents came out to help dig the footers and we got almost half-way done with the exterior footings.
