Laphroaig 15

Laphroaig 15, 43% abv

Nose: A fresh field. Mossy peat, very green. Some vanilla, smoke

Taste: Peat! Dark, sweet, salty, almond, lasting pepper

Personal: The Laphroaig 10 used to be my favorite before the Ardbeg (10) and the Laphroaig 15 nearly brings me back. Where the Ardbeg has a grassy brief, sweetness, the Laphroaig has a lasting finish on my tongue that makes this dram last twice as long as a typical malt.

Aberlour A'bunadh

Aberlour A'bunadh, 59.2% abv, Batch No 78

Nose: Bread, chocolate, dark caramel, peat or green hay. Some wood.

Taste: Vanilla! Caramel. A violin pull across burnt sugar, severe pepper finish.

Personal: a hailstorm or pepper and alcohol on my tongue like hot coals; cask strength there...sitting in front of the fire would be a good place to enjoy this.

Ardbeg 10

Ardbeg 10, 46% abv, non-chill filtered

Nose: Straw or hay, sweet, vanilla. Fleeting.

Taste: Peat! and sweet. Some alcohol aftertaste, but just enough to be pleasant.

Personal: Before the Uigeadail, this was my favorite scotch. The simple sweet yet complex grassy and peat smoke of the Ardbeg have won me over.

Trappistes Rochefort

trappisterochefort

Appearance: Dark brown, rich, light brown head
Aroma: citrus hops, malt
Taste: incredibly smooth, very lightly hopped, almost unnoticeable hop bitterness, malty sweet mouthfeel
Brewery: Abbaye St-Remy
Overall:

I enjoy taste of this beer quite a bit - the smooth malt masks the strong alcohol character; the light hop allows this rustic ale's character to come through.

Notes: JC gave me this beer after a trip to France over Christmas 2007. 11% abv

Chambly Noire

chambly_noire Appearance: Absolutely black, opaque.
Aroma: Very slight fruit, not characteristically belgian (being so reserved), malt, some wood..
Taste: malty, deep. Rough mouthfeel for a belgian. No diacetyl at all. Fruity, plum or dark cherry..
Brewery: Unibroue: Quebec, Canada
Overall: 7/10.
Personal: Thought I would like a Belgian dark just because I love dark ales and belgian brews. It's pleasant but I enjoy a good dubbel or trippel more so.

Beer Dinner: Bierra Paradiso (Georgetown) Stout Dinner

bierra_georgetown Justin and I went to Bierra Paradiso on the 28th for a stout dinner, where Greg, their "sommelier" of sorts, told us about the various stouts we were imbibing, and why he paired them with their chosen courses.

An excellent time had by all, even with the walk across the Key bridge to the Rosslyn metro...

Longrow 10

Campbeltown 1995, 46%, J&A Mitchell & Co Ltd

Appearance: Lamp oil, decent legs. Incredibly clear with a hint of green
Nose: Sherry wood, freshly chopped wood, headier alchol smell, cinnamon, peat
Taste: the incongruence of peat and salt is crazy. Roughish. Finish is almost too subtle. Light fruit.
Personal: Day before my 32nd birthday at Justin's house. This scotch has a cleansing nose and a sweet taste that makes it incredibly refreshing. The peat comes through amazingly!

Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist

(arry nam baysht)
Limited 1990 release, non-chill filtered
Appearance: Straw, saffron rice, very small legs
Nose: Buttery peat bubbling over the top, then deepening into various green shades of a bamboo forest. Again after tasting; Ardbeg but with a complex, smoky peat on top. Jumbly tumbling notes of pine, wood, peat, salt, mushrooms
Taste: Butter sweet wonderland. Finish is hot wind across a plain.
Personal: Of the Ardbegs I've tasted, this is an excellent addition to the family. The most buttery of those I've tasted so far. After a few minutes, the glass seems to warm of its own accord, like a charcoal chimney

Lagavulin 16

Port Ellen, Isle of Islay, 46%
Appearance: Coppery, amber, sherry
Nose: Malt, smoke, sweet, reserved
Taste: Smokey, peat, salt, wood, plum roasted honey
Personal: Mush stonier than Laphroaig, though very similar. A sharp, smoky reminder of why I drink scotch.
